Additional Learning Needs (ALN) at Ysgol Cynfran

Ms Cora Williams is the school’s ALNCo, and we would like to reassure you that all staff at Ysgol Cynfran take great pride in the way we support our learners and in our success helping them reach their individual goals. This success is the result of strong teamwork within school, collaboration with external agencies, and, most importantly, partnership with our learners and their families.

All staff receive regular training to ensure they are confident in supporting pupils with Additional Learning Needs (ALN). The ALNCo attends regional ALN forums and local cluster meetings to keep the school informed about current guidance and best practice.

If you have any concerns, your child’s class teacher should always be your first point of contact, as they know your child best and work with them on a daily basis.

Depending on their needs, your child will receive either Universal/Universal Targeted Provision or Additional Learning Provision. They may also be supported through a One-Page Profile, Individual Targets, a Learner Profile, or an Individual Development Plan (IDP). Regardless of the level of provision, we are committed to ensuring every child continues to receive high-quality, personalised support.

The Welsh ALN Code

Below you will find information about the Welsh ALN Code.

At Ysgol Cynfran, pupils identified with Additional Learning Needs are supported through an Individual Development Plan (IDP). This plan records and monitors all of the learner’s Additional Learning Provision (ALP) in line with the Additional Learning Needs Code for Wales.

Some pupils who do not have an identified ALN may still benefit from short-term programmes or interventions as part of our Universal Offer. This ensures that we meet the broad range of learning needs across our school. In some cases, children may require additional targeted support, with specific individual targets that are reviewed termly. Further details of this can be found in our Provision Map and ALN Policy.

Parents and carers are always welcome to discuss the Additional Learning Needs Code for Wales with the Headteacher or ALNCo.

Admissions for children with disabilities are made in consultation with the Headteacher, ALNCo, Governing Body, Parents/Carers, and the Local Authority. Decisions are based on several factors, including the level of support the school can provide and the accessibility of our building and facilities. A child with disabilities will have their Additional Learning Provision detailed within their IDP, outlining the support required to access both the school environment and the curriculum. The Headteacher, ALNCo, and Governors ensure this support is implemented and that any necessary resources or aids are provided.

More Able and Talented Learners

At Ysgol Cynfran, we also recognise that some pupils may be identified as More Able and Talented (MAT). These learners may excel in areas such as academics, creativity, sport, or leadership. We provide enrichment and extension opportunities to challenge and nurture their abilities, ensuring they are able to reach their full potential.
